Liz’s Top Tips for Trick or Treating.

It’s that time of year again. Children in frighteningly cute attire will knock on doors with the promise of a trick unless you provide them with a treat. But before you set off to fill your plastic pumpkin buckets with chocs and sweets, have a quick read of these 13 Halloween tips for you and your little ones.

1. If you’ve got a child with allergies or food sensitivities, be sure to read any unfamiliar labels before handing over the sweets.

2. Dark colours are obviously harder to see at night, so dress your kids up in bright costumes or add reflective accessories to their spooky suits.

3. Make sure that the costumes fit your child properly. Hems should be well above the ground to avoid tripping, and kids should have full range of motion.

4. Have kids carry glow sticks or torches to help them see and be seen by drivers.

5. It goes without saying, kids should always have an adult accompanying them as they Trick or Treat.

6. Children should never enter stranger’s homes. Keep them close-by at all times.

7. Set a good example and only cross the street where it is safe.

8. Check all sweets before handing them over to your child. Make sure all wrappers are sealed, and throw away any homemade goods. You can never be too careful.

9. Be polite! Manners cost nothing. Also, be respectful of those houses that don’t have decorations up, or don’t answer the door. Not everybody wants to take part.

10. If your family pet comes along, make sure they are kept on a leash at all times. Also, fill your pockets with poo bags so you can bag it and bin it.

11. Don’t be greedy. Don’t grab handfuls of what is on offer unless invited to by the host.

12. Have a curfew and stick to it. Don’t stay out too late, otherwise you’ll have grumpy ghouls greeting you in the morning.

13. Enjoy yourself. Halloween is all about having fun.
